Good evening, friends.
Today, for one day only, Queer Country Wisdom is taking a different tack.
I’m sharing with you a video called a Wednesday Waffle.
Basically, it’s a short video you share with a dear friend each Wednesday, and they share one back. You recap your life from the preceding week as a way of keeping in touch when you might otherwise cross like ships in the night due to schedules, etc.
As you might imagine, these can be quite intimate and vulnerable - as is certainly true of this one. But, in the interests of being vulnerable and intimate and transparent with you all, I’m sharing this one. This is the Wednesday Waffle I recorded just this evening for my dear friend Nikita in Philadelphia.
In this video, I share how I (and doubtless many queer folks, middle-class folks, women, and/or hopeful mothers) am feeling in the wake of Donald Trump retaking the White House. If you can relate, I’m so sorry - please know you are not alone. And I know that in Vermont, there are even a fair few conservatives who were happy to see Phil Scott return to the Governor’s Mansion but devastated to see Trump take back the White House. I see you, fellow Vermonters. Our state needs you to retain your empathy, humanity, decency, and moderation now more than ever.
Even in the wake of this dark American moment, please note: I may not be proud to be an American right now, but I am still proud (and perhaps prouder than ever) to be a Vermonter. If you’re reading this from the Brave Little State, I hope you can muster the spirit to feel the same.
If you see me out and about in St. Johnsbury in the coming days, I hope you’ll say hello and let me know if you’d like to tell me what you think it means to be a good Vermonter. Pursuing this question feels more urgent and more important now than it ever has. I wish I had more time to spend on this work, which is given freely to the public; if you feel compelled to support it, I’m always grateful to folks who make a pledge, which will convert to an affordable paid subscription once To Be a Good Vermonter hits 1,000 subscribers.
Stay resilient, my friends. And if you know someone with whom you’d like to start doing a Wednesday Waffle video, feel free to share this post with them for reference.
Thank you so much, as always.
Warmly,
Jack
